Right now, it’s our on-farm testing program—and how our early-season tests are progressing. In March, I wrote about our plans and best practices for the season ahead. Now that we’re well into the first phase of testing, I’ve been reflecting on what’s working and where we can improve. We conduct a lot of side-by-side comparisons on our farm, especially focused on crop nutrition and biological products. These tests help us validate new inputs and determine whether they’re truly beneficial for our specific farming practices and land. What works on a neighbor’s field doesn’t always work on ours, so learning through our own data is critical. This spring, we added a liquid in-furrow system to our planter to trial a variety of in-furrow treatments—mostly biologicals or additives aimed at supporting the soil’s microbial life. I enjoy building systems so I set this one up myself. The planter features a 12-section control system on the 24-rows, along with an electronic flow monitoring system to ensure each row stays unclogged. But despite the solid equipment, one thing has me second-guessing a few of our tests: the mixing process. I didn’t use our Mixmate system this time around and I really missed it. Accurate mixing is the foundation for effective testing, and I have less confidence in some of our trials because I’m not sure how precise our application mixes were. Reading tank levels just doesn’t compare to what I’m used to with automated metering and recordkeeping. Our flow monitoring worked well, but without accurate input data and calibration, the application rates may still be off. This has sparked some serious discussions about improving our tendering system for next year. Adding a liquid system to the planter introduces complexity that can slow down planting if the support systems aren’t up to par. That’s one of the reasons why we developed Mixmate in the first place—to solve the real-world problems we were seeing on our own farm: the need for speed, accurate measurement, and trustworthy records. My goal with testing is always to remove as many variables as possible, so the results can stand on their own. Right now, I’m not fully confident in a few of our trials—and that’s frustrating. But it’s also motivating. I can already see how much better we can make this system next.

While the art of maintaining a tractor can be recreational for some, Bruley was referring to the new way his shop is being heated. Last summer, Bruley installed a hydronic heating system for his new repair shop, replacing a dilapidated building that was on its last legs. “I figured I might as well get with the times,” Bruley said. Bruley isn’t alone. Radiant heating is becoming the standard for new building projects. But what is hydronic heating? Why is it rapidly replacing the more traditional forced-air option? First, let’s go over the basics. Hydronic radiant systems use in-floor tubing (called PEX pipes) through which heated water circulates. A hydronic system can be installed in concrete in a slab-on-grade construction, in a thin layer of concrete over a subfloor, underneath the subfloor between the joists in an existing home with a basement or crawl space, or within a subfloor. Without blasting air through the house, hydronic radiant systems can boast features like being quiet, being easier to zone, and no stirring up of dust or allergens. Hydronic systems can be paired with many types of heat sources, including gas and electric boilers, heat pumps, geothermal systems, and solar heating. Because radiant heat is stored in the structures being heated, it dissipates slowly, meaning it can keep homes comfortable during power failures or when large doors are opened. And with the right controls, accessories, and installation methods, hydronic radiant heating can help achieve energy efficiency goals while providing warmth and comfort to a home’s occupants in cold climates. “That’s the main reason we designed HUG Hydronics. To meet the demand, the team at HUG decided that simplicity was a priority. “We made our system so it can use any type of boiler, run in a zero-pressure environment, and, on top of that, made it so easy to install, anyone can put it together in about an hour,” said Hunt. Traditional hydronic system requires many complicated parts, including control & mixing valves, copper piping, pressure tanks, manifolds, bubble removers, and must be run under a pressurized system. Not only do they have all those requirements, they must be installed by a trained professional. The HUG Hydronics system takes all of those barriers and does away with them. “Once the boiler’s been installed, anyone can set up the HUG Hydronics system,” assured Hunt. Instead of the complicated traditional system that has been unchanged for decades, the HUG Hydronics system relies on submersible pumps laid into a tank of water. These pumps are directly connected to the PEX pipes that have been laid in the floor. These pumps circulate the heated fluid through the floor and are very easy to connect. “The second I saw it, I knew it was going to work wonderfully,” said Minnesota contractor Neal Lesmeister, of Weathershield Homes. “I’ve already recommended it to other contractors.” Contractors have picked up on the hydronics trend by incorporating HUG Hydronics into their build schedule.
